The ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class require an understanding of the ideals of Scouting as well as beginning&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Rank Advancement<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=merit-badge\" target=\"_self\" title=\"There are 21 badges that are required for Eagle rank, and more than 100 others that can be earned. Something for everyone! For each badge, there is a merit badge book with much of the information necessary to complete the&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Merit Badge<\/a>s and is the official roster for the Troop<\/p>\n<p>Unlike in Cub Scouts, <a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=parent\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Parent implies Parent or Guardian of the Scout\" class=\"encyclopedia\">parent<\/a>s do not sign off on their own son as he completes the rank and merit badge requirements. Instead, as a Scout completes each of the requirements to advance to his next rank, a unit leader should initial each completed requirement in his <em>Scout Handbook<\/em> or a copy of the new rank advancement requirements if the&nbsp;Scout has an older version of the <em>Scout Handbook.<\/em> A <strong>unit leader<\/strong> is defined as any&nbsp;of the following individuals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=patrol-leader\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Patrol Leader(PL). The Patrol Leader is elected by the patrol and leads the patrol. Reports to: The Senior Patrol Leader Patrol Leader duties: &bull; Plan and lead patrol meetings and activities. &bull; Keep patrol members informed. &bull; Assign each patrol&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Patrol Leader<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=troop-guide\" target=\"_self\" title=\"To work actively with new Scouts in the Baden-Powell program. The Troop Guides introduce new Scouts to troop operations and help them feel comfortable in the troop. Reports to the Assistant Scoutmaster (ASPL) of the Baden-Powell patrol (New Scout Patrol)&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Troop Guide<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=assistant-senior-patrol-leader\" target=\"_self\" title=\"The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader is the second highest-ranking junior leader in the Troop. He is appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) with the approval of the Scoutmaster. The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader acts as the Senior Patrol Leader&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Assistant Senior Patrol Leader<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=senior-patrol-leader\" target=\"_self\" title=\"The Senior Patrol Leader is elected by the Scouts to represent them as the top junior leader in the troop. Reports to: Scoutmaster Senior Patrol Leader duties: &bull; Preside at all troop meetings, events, activities, and the annual program planning&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Senior Patrol Leader<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=junior-assistant-scoutmaster\" target=\"_self\" title=\"The Junior Assistant Scoutmaster serves in the capacity of an Assistant Scoutmaster except where legal age and maturity are required. He must be at least 16 years old and not yet 18. He is appointed by the Scoutmaster because of&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Junior Assistant Scoutmaster<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=assistant-scoutmaster\" target=\"_self\" title=\"The Scoutmaster, with the assistance of the troop committee, recruits assistant Scoutmasters to help operate the troop. Each assistant Scoutmaster is assigned specific duties and reports to the Scoutmaster. They also fulfill the required two-deep leadership standards set by the&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Assistant Scoutmaster<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=scoutmaster\" target=\"_self\" title=\"The Scoutmaster is the adult leader responsible for the image and program of the troop. The Scoutmaster and his assistant Scoutmasters work directly with the Scouts. The Scoutmaster can be male or female but must be at least 21 years&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Scoutmaster<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Any other adult leader in the Troop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The unit leader initialing the Scout&rsquo;s <em>Handbook<\/em> will be responsible for assuring that the Scout has&nbsp;successfully completed the particular requirement that he is initialing prior to signing.<\/p>\n<p>The Troop will work on as many rank advancements as possible during regular Troop meetings and outings in order to give each Scout an opportunity to advance. lt is the&nbsp;Scout&rsquo;s individual responsibility, however, to see to it that he successfully completes all of the&nbsp;requirements and merit badges for a rank advancement before he requests either a&nbsp;Scoutmaster&rsquo;s Conference or a <a title=\"ABCs of Troop 100\" href=\"http:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/board-of-review\/\">Board of Review<\/a> meeting.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Merit badges<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div>Merit badges are required for advancement to the higher ranks (Star, Life and Eagle). There are over one hundred different merit badges for scouts to earn. They vary widely in subject matter and in the level of difficulty. They are designed to: introduce boys&nbsp;to possible career opportunities; teach boys important outdoor knowledge and skills; to provide a strong character base to each scout&rsquo;s education and training; and, to provide&nbsp;recreation. Merit badges may be earned in any order and a scout does not have to attain&nbsp;a certain rank in order to work on badges. A few of the merit badges have age restrictions.<\/div>\n<p>All merit badges have an element of learning and fun in the various activities. To&nbsp;attain Eagle rank, among other requirements, a scout must earn at least 21 merit badges,<br>\nfifteen of which are &ldquo;required&rdquo; merit badges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Camping\" target=\"_blank\">Camping<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Citizenship_in_the_community\" target=\"_blank\">Citizenship in the Community<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Citizenship_in_the_nation\">Citizenship in the Nation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Citizenship_in_the_world\" target=\"_blank\">Citizenship in the World<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Communications\">Communications<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Cycling\">Cycling<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Emergency_Preparedness\">Emergency Preparedness<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Environmental_Science\">Environmental Science<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Family_Life\">Family Life<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/First_Aid\">First Aid<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Hiking\">Hiking<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Lifesaving\">Lifesaving<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Personal_Fitness\">Personal Fitness<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Personal_Management\">Personal Management<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/meritbadge.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Swimming\">Swimming<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Advancement Process<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div>After completing rank advancement requirements, but before earning a rank&nbsp;advancement, the Boy Scout must schedule a <a title=\"ABCs of Troop 100\" href=\"http:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/scoutmaster-conference\/\">Scoutmaster&rsquo;s Conference<\/a> and pass a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/board-of-review\/\">Board of Review<\/a>. To assure the <a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=troop-committee\" target=\"_self\" title=\"This committee is composed of the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, and registered adult leaders. All interested parents are invited to attend. The Troop Committee is responsible for ensuring that the Troop resources are managed and available to support Troop activities. These&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Troop Committee<\/a> that all the requirements have been met. Prior to the conference and <a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=board-of-review\" target=\"_self\" title=\"When a Scout has completed all of the requirements for advancing to the next rank and has had a Scoutmaster conference, a Board of Review is scheduled. At least three adult leaders meet with the Scout. The Scout answers questions&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Board of Review<\/a>, all requirements should have been initialed in the&nbsp;boy&rsquo;s <em>Scout Handbook<\/em> or advancement sheet.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the Scoutmaster&rsquo;s Conference is to review the Scout&rsquo;s goals and&nbsp;objectives and his progress toward achieving them. Boys are encouraged to call the Scoutmaster at his home; however it is also acceptable to initiate a discussion at a regular Troop meeting. &nbsp;lf the Scoutmaster is unavailable for any reason, any Troop 100 Assistant Scoutmaster may conduct the Scoutmaster&rsquo;s Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Once the Scout has completed the Scoutmaster&rsquo;s Conference he will need to go before a Board of Review. The Board is composed of at least three members of the Troop Committee one of whom is designated as the Chair. Boards of Review should be held as soon as possible after a scout has completed the Scoutmaster&rsquo;s Conference. Boards of Review are scheduled monthly &ndash; usually before or during the 1st Troop meeting of each month and as needed. Boards of Review are typically scheduled during the week before&nbsp;an upcoming <a title=\"ABCs of Troop 100\" href=\"http:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/court-honor\/\">Court of Honor<\/a>. Dates for currently scheduled Boards of Review may be found on the <a title=\"Google Calendar\" href=\"http:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/calendar\/\">Troop Calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Review is intended to assure that each scout advancing in rank has really completed the requirements for his rank advancement. Rank advancement is not&nbsp;automatic, but dependent on a boy&rsquo;s ability to demonstrate:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>He has successfully completed each of the requirements for the rank to&nbsp;which he seeks to advance;<\/li>\n<li>He has achieved a level of physical and emotional maturity commensurate&nbsp;with his new rank; and,<\/li>\n<li>His behavior is compatible with the ideals and beliefs embodied by the term&nbsp;&ldquo;Scout Spirit&rdquo; (i.e. <a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=scout-oath\" target=\"_self\" title=\"On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Scout Oath<\/a> and Law).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>The Board determines whether or not the boy is ready to advance to the next rank. &nbsp;Should the Board find that a boy is not yet ready for the advancement, they will help him&nbsp;establish a program to satisfy the requirements. Upon successful completion of the review&nbsp;process, the Board Chair will ensure that arrangements are made for the boy to receive his new&nbsp;rank at the next <a href=\"https:\/\/troop100seattle.com\/?encyclopedia=court-of-honor\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Three times a year (October, March, June) there is a special meeting in which rank advancements and merit badges are awarded.
